|WellPoint State Sponsored Business Appoints Former West Virginia State Medicaid Director as Vice President Account Management|
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) today announced the appointment of Nancy V. Atkins as vice president of Account Management in its State Sponsored Business Unit, responsible for the leadership and oversight of relationships at regulatory agencies across the country. In addition, Atkins will represent State Sponsored Business on policy and regulatory matters in the current states where WellPoint serves Medicaid beneficiaries.

Prior to joining WellPoint, Atkins served as commissioner of the Bureau of Medical Services and the state Medicaid director in West Virginia. She spent six years overseeing West Virginia's complex $2.2 billion Medicaid program and ensured compliance of the state's Medicaid program with state and federal rules, policies, and standards. In addition, she served as the national chair of the executive committee for the National Association of State Medicaid Directors and on the board of directors for the American Public Human Services Association.
Atkins' career spans more than 25 years in health care as a Nurse Practitioner and later transitioned into the legislative arena as Commissioner of the Bureau of Medical Services and the State Medicaid Director in West Virginia. Atkins received her Master of Science in Nursing at Bellarmine College in Kentucky, a Bachelors of Science degree in Health Care Administration at St. Joseph's College in Maine and was certified as a Nurse Practitioner in Women's Health Care in 1979.
