WellPoint to Administer Part D Enrollment Program for Low Income Medicare Beneficiaries

Point-of-Sale Facilitated Enrollment Program Highlights Unique Public-Private Collaboration

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- For the third consecutive year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected WellPoint, Inc's. subsidiary, UniCare Life and Health Insurance Company, to administer the Point of Sale Facilitated Enrollment (POS FE) process designed to provide a "safety net" to qualified low-income Medicare beneficiaries who are without prescription drug benefits.

The POS FE process expedites Part D enrollment in situations where a full- benefit dual eligible (Medicare + Medicaid) or Low Income Subsidy (LIS) eligible Medicare beneficiary visits the pharmacy to obtain prescription medications and does not have coverage in effect with a Part D plan. Since its inception in 2006, this process has enrolled more than 80,000 low-income Medicare beneficiaries who might otherwise pay for prescriptions out-of-pocket or go without the drugs they need.

"We are pleased to participate in this unique relationship with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to help provide vitally important prescription drug coverage to low-income Medicare beneficiaries so they can obtain the medications they need when they need them," said Susan E. Rawlings, president of WellPoint's Senior Business Division.

The company's participation in the process is another example of its commitment to providing solutions to one of health care's most pressing problems: access to coverage for those who are uninsured and under-insured.

"Through this creative solution, Medicare beneficiaries are getting the help they need to manage their health care," said Anne R. Cooke, WellPoint's vice president and general manager of Medicare Part D.

In October, CMS announced that WellPoint, Inc. affiliated companies were the only companies to bid below the benchmark in all regions for Part D prescription drug plans, underscoring the affordability of the company's Part D plans in all 50 states.
