WellPoint Foundation and Associates Pledge More Than $23 Million to Community Organizations in 2008

More Than 9,600 Not-for-Profit Organizations To Receive Support from Associate Giving, WellPoint Foundation

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP), today announced that associates nationwide pledged more than $15 million to support not-for-profit organizations around the country in 2008. The WellPoint Foundation, Inc. one of the nation's largest corporate foundations, with net assets of nearly $200 million, will match 50 percent of associate pledges increasing the total to more than $23 million.

"We have a heritage of caring and a commitment to social responsibility that is reflected through the extraordinary generosity of our associates. That commitment is integral to our corporate culture and central to our business practices at all levels of the company," said Angela Braly, president and chief executive officer of WellPoint, Inc. "This year our associates exceeded our company-wide goal, representing an all-time high in giving."

The funds pledged will help more than 9,600 not-for-profit organizations fulfill their missions to help people in times of need.

"At WellPoint we know there are thousands of charitable organizations in our states that need our support," Braly said. "I am honored by the incredible generosity our associates showed and am touched at how our associates are living out the mission of the organization in every day ways."

In addition to the associate giving campaign, the WellPoint Foundation and its subsidiary state foundations provide grants to support WellPoint's corporate mission-to improve the lives of the people we serve and the health of our communities. The WellPoint Foundation recently announced two signature initiatives-a three-year, $30 million dollar commitment to reduce the number of uninsured, and a multigenerational approach to improving public health.

During 2007, the foundations funded $20 million in grants to numerous programs across the country. In response to the devastating fires in California, an emergency grant of $50,000 was provided to the American Red Cross, which was used to provide shelter, clothing, and supplies for people left homeless by the fires. A $250,000 grant was also provided in response to the tragedy at Virginia Tech to establish scholarships to promote cultural integration.

"Through our foundations and our social responsibility programs, we put the full weight of the company into finding lasting solutions to the social issues we understand best-health care quality, affordability and accessibility," said Caroline 'Caz' Matthews, president of the WellPoint Foundation. "In the end, this focus allows us to have a measurable and sustainable impact on critical health care needs in the communities we serve."
