Indianapolis - Oct. 1, 2007 - WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP), announced today that Mark Boxer, president and CEO of Operations, Technology and Government Services, has been named the 2007 Tony Coelho Award winner. The presentation was made during a ceremony today, the first day of National Disability Awareness month.
The award is named after the Honorable Tony Coelho, author of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is presented annually to a CEO, president, or government leader who has demonstrated a significant commitment to employ people with disabilities in competitive positions, and worked to influence other business and government leaders.
"Mark has been a passionate champion for the hiring of individuals with disabilities," said Angela F. Braly, president and chief executive officer of WellPoint, Inc. "This well-deserved recognition is reflective of his dedication and leadership to help improve employment opportunities for all Americans."
Former Congressman Coelho presented the award to Boxer, which was accompanied by a proclamation from Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana, recognizing the leadership of WellPoint and Boxer. Andy Imparato, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, joined Coelho at the event.
Boxer crafted WellPoint's relationship with Bender Consulting Services, a partnership that has resulted in creative staffing models for Americans with disabilities. Bender Consulting Services is led by Joyce Bender, a nationally recognized leader for inclusive hiring, and corporate sponsor of Boxer's award.
"Mark Boxer is an incredible leader who has not only led the charge for the competitive employment of Americans with disabilities, but has influenced other CEOs to do the same." said Joyce Bender.
"When you think of a singular great leader who truly championed the rights of people with disabilities - you think of The Honorable Tony Coelho," said Boxer. "To be recognized with an award that bears his name means that WellPoint is having real success in creating a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve."
